Legra is the first recorded name for Leigh-on-Sea as documented in the Doomsday Book, 1086.
Leigh-on-Sea began as a fishing village between the north bank of the Thames estuary and a cliff and has developed into a modern and popular place to live and visit. Leigh still retains an ambiance of a village and is the centre of community activity. Old Leigh (the original fishing village) plays host to numerous festivals including the Leigh Art Trail, the Leigh Folk Festival (always featuring The Famous Potatoes) and the Old Leigh Regatta. The annual Leigh Art Trail is a chance for local and invited international artists to show their works in the area's shops and cafes.
